Maintaining good health has become a challenge in today's world. Today's modern lifestyle - poor diet, tremendous stress, pollution, tight routines, constant sitting, long work hours, and many other unhealthy living practices - man has become prone to many chronic diseases. He has moved away from nature and a healthy way of life in due course of time. This demanded powerful drugs which gradually decreased the immune system and increased the accumulation of toxins in the body. Today the need for a holistic approach to health is more significant than ever before.
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine based on natural and holistic living, derives from two Sanskrit words - Ayu or life, and Veda or knowledge. This Science of Life analyses the human body through a combination of the body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda emphasizes prevention of disease, rejuvenation of our body systems, and extension of life span. The profound premise and promise of Ayurveda is that through certain practices, not only can we prevent diseases , but we can also live a long healthy life in balance and harmony, achieve our fullest potential, and express our true inner nature on a daily basis. Ayurveda uses a multitude of healing modalities including herbs, diet, colors, aromas, sound, lifestyle recommendations, Pancha Karma, meditation, and yoga. More and more people are discovering that these ancient principles are easily applicable to modern life and that they have the power to create health and contentment.
Panchakarma (meaning "five actions") is the word for the five different procedures used in Ayurveda which are believed to purify the body. This is done in two ways: 1. Pacifying the aggravated doshas by using appropriate diet, natural herbs and minerals. 2. Eliminating the increased Doshas from the body. Panchakarma is always performed in three stages: Purva Karma (pre-treatment) , Pradhana Karma (primary treatment) Paschat Karma (post-treatment). The patient who opts for any one of the five therapies must invariably undergo all three stages. There are so many subtypes of this therapy and different types of herbal massages, fomentation's such as steam, external oil treatments, Basti (medicated enemas), Virechana (purgation through herbs), Vamana (emesis through herbs), Nasya (nasal administration of oils) etc. are also incorporated. These practices are extremely helpful in relieving deep seated diseases as well as being beneficial for maintaining and improving physical and mental health.
Ayurveda and yoga are sister Vedic sciences that have been united for thousands of years for the sake of healing body, mind, and consciousness. Generally speaking, Ayurveda deals more with the health of the body, while yoga deals with purifying the mind and consciousness, but in reality they complement and embrace each other. Both have inseparable relationships. Yoga clubbed together with Ayurveda will produce positive effects on health. At the outset, we must understand what we can gain out of this wonderful practice. At the physical level, yoga and its cleansing practices have proven to be extremely effective for various disorders.
